Permission mode controls which of your destinations are allowed to reply or send emails through an alias. It's a security layer — without it, anyone who knew your alias address could potentially spoof it as the sender.
The two modes
Open mode — any of your verified destinations can reply or send from this alias, as long as the reply or send feature is enabled on that destination. Less restrictive, more flexible.
Strict mode — only the destinations explicitly added (linked) to this alias can use it for replies or sending. Any attempt to use the alias from an unlinked mailbox is blocked.
Which to use
For most users, Strict Mode is the right default. It ensures your aliases can only be used from their explicitly assigned destination inbox.
Use Open Mode if you manage multiple verified destinations and need the flexibility to reply from an alias using any of them.
Setting the mode
You can set your Alias Permission Mode globally for your entire account:
- Navigate to Settings in the dashboard.
- Select the Aliases tab.
- Under the Alias Permission Mode card, choose either Open Mode or Strict Mode.
This is an account-wide setting that applies to all of your aliases.
This only applies to replies and sending
To enable replying from a destination, see Destinations and toggle on Can Reply for the relevant destination.
Alias Permission Mode only controls outbound emails (replies and sends). Incoming email forwarding is not affected and will always work as long as the alias is active.
